Function Transformations

What

  • Translations (slides): horizontal and vertical.
  • Reflections (flips): across lines of symmetry, especially the x-axis, y-axis, and the line y=x.
  • Rotations: generally around a point of symmetry like the origin.
  • Dilations (compressions and stretches): horizontal and vertical.

Why

  • Studying transformations will help you understand the relationship between graphs and the algebra that describes them and between similar graphs,
  • You should be able to determine the equation of a function by looking at its graph
  • You should be able to sketch the graph of a function by looking at its equation.

Here's a presentation to help you get the idea.
